Every template comes with a choice of palettes, and you can also use your own brand colors: a background and an accent. We build the rest of your colors from those two, and check every one so your words stay easy to read.
Use your own colors
- Open Look and choose your template.
- Under Colors, choose Custom colors.
- Under Your colors, set your Background color and your Accent color. Choose the color square beside each one to open its picker, or type the code you already use, such as
#e07020.- In the picker, click or drag in the large square to choose how strong and how bright the color is, and use the strip under it to choose the color itself. The colors below the strip come from your template's palettes, as a place to start.
- The picker stays open while you try colors, so you can click as many as you like. Choose Done, press Escape, or click anywhere else to close it.
- Without a mouse, use the arrow keys in the square (hold Shift for bigger steps) and on the strip.
- Watch the preview change as you go, then choose Save Colors and Fonts, or Use and the template's name if you are switching templates too.
- Choose Publish when you're ready. Your new colors go live when you publish, together with anything else waiting.
Your background is the color behind your pages. Your accent is used for buttons, links and highlights.
What to expect
- We work out the rest for you: slightly lighter or darker panels, lines, and text colors that read clearly on your background.
- If a color would make text hard to read, we move it a little lighter or darker, keeping its hue. Look tells you exactly what changed, for example "We lightened your orange slightly so text stays readable."
- Each template is designed for a dark page or a light one, and a few suit both. If your background doesn't suit the template, we lighten or darken it and say why. Legacy and Showcase are dark; Field Notes, Homestead, Happy Pack and Sculpture are light; Clearview and the Companion Index suit either.
- Your colors wait for Publish, like every change to your look. Until then, the editor and your preview show them and visitors see your current colors. Choose Undo in the next few seconds to go back.
- Changing templates keeps your custom colors, adjusted to suit the new template.
Go back to a palette
Choose Reset to a Palette, or any palette under Colors, then save and publish. We keep your custom colors, so you can switch back to them later.
If something goes wrong
- Your code isn't accepted. Codes are a
#and six letters or numbers, such as#1e1e1e. Look says "Enter a color like #e07020." until it is one. - Your accent looks different from your brand. We adjusted it so text on and around it can be read. Try a slightly darker or lighter version of your color yourself, or pick a background that contrasts more with it.
- Look says it couldn't make the two colors readable together. Choose a different accent. The save button waits until the pair works.
