Choosing a breed

Choose a structured breed, understand alternate names, and know what happens when a breed is not listed.

Updated

Breed fields suggest names from Kennel Press's breed reference and also allow custom breeds. The list follows the species selected for the website, so changing species changes the available catalog choices.

Choose from the list

Start typing, use the arrow keys to highlight a suggestion, then press Enter. Press Enter or type a comma to add another breed. You can also paste comma-separated names. Catalog names that contain a comma stay together as one choice. Each selected breed becomes a removable choice, and text still in the search box is included when you save or continue.

Each choice is written on its own line when browser scripting is turned off. This keeps names containing commas unambiguous.

Alternate breed names

The reference combines established registry sources and keeps alternate names as aliases. If an existing website used an exact alternate name, Kennel Press can connect it to the canonical breed and use the catalog's standard display name.

Breed names do not change based on capitalization or extra spaces. An exact alternate name becomes the canonical catalog choice and adding it again does not make a duplicate. Kennel Press does not use approximate spelling, appearance, registration number or another animal's details to make the choice.

Custom breeds

If the catalog does not contain your breed, type it in full and press Enter to add it as a Custom choice. For example, Aussiedoodles remains exactly that label. Custom choices appear on your website and are marked Custom because they have no canonical catalog ID. A later catalog update never changes one automatically; choose a catalog suggestion explicitly if you want to remap it.

When what you typed is only the start of a catalog breed, such as "Aus", Kennel Press does not save it. Pick the breed from the list, or choose Add “Aus” if you really want it as a Custom choice.

More than one breed

Add each breed one at a time. A dog, a litter or your program can list up to eight breeds, and each shows as its own chip. Long names wrap inside the chip, and hovering shows the full name.

Groups and litters

Groups do not need a separate breed choice. They use the website's breed and their parent records, which prevents the same group from acquiring conflicting breed labels.

What to expect

  • Suggestions include only breeds for your website's species.
  • Catalog choices show Catalog and can support future directory filters; custom choices cannot.
  • You can keep several breeds in the order you add them.
  • An exact alternate name may be standardized to its canonical name when you save.
  • Existing compatibility text keeps its original spelling and casing; an exact structured match is stored beside it.

If something goes wrong

If a saved legacy name could not be mapped, it appears as Custom for review rather than being guessed. Remove it and choose a catalog suggestion if there is a correct match, or keep it custom. Contact support with the breed name and a reliable registry source if it should be considered for a future reference update.
